Addressing behavioral health issues takes all of us.
IBHRI is a 501(c)(3) independent research institute dedicated to studying health, mental health, and social issues.
We offer a collaborative home to new and established researchers, practitioners, advocates, and community business partners with diverse backgrounds interested in working together to solve complex, multidimensional behavioral health issues.
Overview
IBHRI has a board of directors, research affiliates, interns, and community business partners. We offer a Research Affiliate program to scholars who wish to be associated with the institute. A Research Affiliate is a guest researcher (scientist, scholar, external faculty, student, and/or fellow) permitted to engage in scientific studies and investigations using IBHRI facilities and resources. Under this appointment, these individuals further their own research by using equipment and resources that are otherwise unavailable to them. They provide no direct services to IBHRI but are encouraged to consider supporting the IBHRI internship program by volunteering to mentor university undergraduate and graduate students. Research Affiliates have a non-employment relationship with IBHRI outside their usual employment positions. Research affiliates are not required to be on-site, and no specific research duties are assigned.
Why Become an IBHRI Affiliate
Some do so to obtain support or to simplify their work as independent researchers. Others hold academic appointments at traditional universities or work in industry but want to show support for and commitment to the behavioral health and social sciences fields through additional affiliation with IBHRI. Others become affiliated to show support for IBHRI and its mission. Research Affiliates can submit proposals and grant applications through IBHRI to government funding agencies, private foundations, and private partners. The authorized official representative writes the supporting letter you need when applying.
IBHRI offers the following to members designated as affiliates:
Formal institutional affiliation
Access to IBHRI resources, staff, interns, and other affiliates to engage in collaborative research
Advarra, an Institutional Review Board (IRB) service at IBHRI’s cost when available
Access to IBHRI’s Google Workspace for Nonprofits and discounts on software through TechSoup
The opportunity to offer teaching or certain types of consultancy under IBHRI’s brand
Association with an institution with FWA approval (Federalwide Assurance for the Protection of Human Subjects)
There is no membership fee. Donations to IBHRI are welcome and support operations and our internship program. The internship program offers stipends to offset educational costs incurred by student interns.
Becoming an IBHRI Affiliate
The Board of Directors reviews applications and makes research affiliate appointments. The appointment recognizes the status of an individual with whom IBHRI wishes to acknowledge some degree of association.
Note: Research affiliate appointments are generally not intended to be of long-term or indefinite duration. Offer of affiliation does not include an employment contract or promise. Research affiliates join IBHRI with the understanding that they are not entitled to compensation or benefits, do not work for IBHRI, and are not entitled to employment at the end of the affiliation. Research affiliate appointments are without salary or stipend. Research affiliates are not employees of IBHRI and do not participate in staff benefits programs. Research affiliates can apply to become external faculty of IBHRI. The designation does not change the volunteer status of the position.
Affiliate Expectations
Those applying to become a research affiliate should first consider the following. Affiliates are expected to:
Review, accept, and adhere to the Researcher Code of Conduct and Affiliation Agreement.
Consider explicitly stating your affiliation with IBHRI in professional contexts (publications, websites, emails, conferences, presentations, etc.).
Add a professional profile to the IBHRI website during your affiliation.
Have a developing or active program of independent research.
Participate in IBHRI activities, such as seminars, research presentations, or mentoring interns or early-career scientists (based on career stage).
Notify us in writing should you decide to terminate your affiliation.
At IBHRI, we value working collaboratively. Our goal is to bring together a diverse and engaged community working on related topics with a shared approach. We look forward to getting to know you and your valuable work. At present, our need is for US-based scholars willing to mentor an IBHRI intern.
To apply, please complete an online application and email your CV to hr-ibhri@ibhri.org with the subject line “IBHRI Affiliate.”
